Gay Marriage and the Church

I never used to give this much thought at all, the concept of the Church being so highly involved in Prop 8. I've given it much thought recently and here is where I am. I don't believe the Church should be allowed to have a say in such a thing. If the Church requires its members to NOT participate in a same-sex marriage, then FINE!! They have every right to have that as a rule and to punish those who break said rule. If the punishment is excommunication, okay. That being said, I have every right to disagree with the Church and to go my own way if same-sex marriage is what I'm searching for.

At this point in time I am not searching for a wife. That's not my point. My point is that the LDS Church, or any church for that matter, should not have a say in federal government. I just don't get it.

Here are more of my feelings, so eloquently shared by A Gay Mormon at BYU on his own blog. I love what he had to say.

The end.

I absolutely agree! I have never asked for a pew in anyone's church in regards to marriage. What I do ask for are the 1300+ rights and responsibilities that the FEDERAL government affords a married couple the second they say "I do." If your religion says that I shouldn't marry, for whatever reason, then by all means don't allow me to marry in your church, but that is not what I, as a gay woman seek. I seek the federal rights, responsibilities, and privileges, NOT the religious ones.

One last rant before I go. How can ANY religion or church say that gay relationships are transient and/or unstable when we have no way to track said relationships? If you won't let us legally marry then we can't legally divorce. Marriage records and divorce records are how we know how transient STRAIGHT couples are but there exist no such records for LGBTQ couples.
